Apple Pie Filling

I have spent the last few days canning apple pie filling and apple sauce. I had always wondered how apple pie filling in the grocery store was made. I never could figure out how the filling part got its consistency. Well, now I know the rest of the story. The recipe I used called for a thickener known as Clear Jell. I had never heard of it, and I had no idea where to locate it. TnFarmGirl told me it would be sold at our local Mennonite Store. So I made a trip and bought me some Clear Jell. That is the secret ingredient in pie filling! The Apple Pie Filling was easy to make, but it did take some time to peel and slice all of the apples. I have several recipes calling for apple pie filling so I wanted to have some homemade. I have recently found several bread recipes made with apple pie filling so I will give them a try. I think they will have to be good!

Have you ever tried the Pampered Chef apple slicer/peeler/corer? My grandma let me borrow hers and it works amazingly well for that task!! You can prepare 5-6 apples for a pie in about 5 minutes! They are $30 from Pampered Chef- I think Brandy Knopp lives in your area, but I bought one off craigslist for $8. Either way if you get one they are well worth it!

Andrea Cherie,
I was wondering if one of those would be worth the expense and storage space. Thanks for the recomendation. Do you know Brandy Knopp? Just wondering if you were in our area. I checked out your blog and it looks great!!

Yes! Certainly worth it! No, I don't live in TN (I live in Tulsa), I ordered some Pampered Chef when TNFarmGirl hosted her party back in August. Brandy seems like a very sweet gal- I got to talk to her on the phone a couple times after I'd made the order!

I really enjoy your blog as we plan to purchase land in a year or two...and then start in on all the gardening, canning and other stuff you do! My husband is from the country and I'm a city girl- I figure by reading up on all this before we get there will help me with ideas and such!

Andrea Cherie,
Brandy is a sweetie. I ran by her house yesterday and dropped off some things for her. I was hoping you might be in our area, but Tulsa is a little out of our beaten path!

I am glad you can learn from our experiences (the good and bad ones). Michael lived on a farm when he was growing up, but I lived in a neighborhood. My mindset sure has changed over the years. I still love animals, but I look at them differently now. I used to hate gardening, but it is now one of my greatest passions. Neither one of us had ever canned anything until we moved to Tennessee. We bought our first canner, and we read the book and taught one another. It was a lot of fun! I still enjoy it when he comes in the kitchen and helps me can. Enjoy your day, and thanks for the tip about the apple/peeler/corer. I do believe I will be purchasing one of those very soon!

Thanks for the encouragement!! Sometime in the next year we plan to make the trek out to TN. I really want to attend an herb class Cheri is offering (like the one coming up soon) and we want to tour the Biltmore...so hopefully we'll get to meet all you sweet ladies!
