The Death of the Fall Garden

It is a good thing we like lettuce because that is about all that remains of my fall garden. There are a few collard greens and green onions down there, but not much else. We made a chicken coop in the barn for our chickens which gave them access to the pastures and the rest of the farm. They loved being out of their poultry netting. It has been a great solution because they have been so happy that we have been getting a multitude of eggs. Then one day they discovered my fall garden. Never mind that the little ingrates had almost 17 acres to eat. No...they wanted my broccoli and cabbage leaves. Before we knew what happened, they ate every leaf off of my plants. I have also noticed that they have gotten into the collard greens. It is a good thing for their little feather behinds that they are producing eggs at a record number or I might just decide that we need several batches of Chicken and Dumplings!!!

Aren't they rascals? I don't know what I'm going to do about my flower gardens. I have big holes all over. I'm a new chicken owner and if they ate my veggies, I'm quite sure I woulc just cry. Sounds like my girls are going to lose their freedom before spring.

Smiles,
Lea
