Homemaking Thoughts

I am good at this...
and this...
and this...
and this, but not this...
No, I am not good at this.  This took me about a month of hard practice and many times trying to get just one quilt square.  This was last year, and I just want to say I was so thankful when garden season rolled around and I had other things to be creative with on a daily basis.  The goal was that I would come back to this someday, but not today or even this year.

This year my daughter is learning to knit.  She took to it very easily, much like she took to quilting class.  I was the absolute failure there.  I personally think she took to quilting class because the teacher felt sorry for her having a mother like me. The teacher played favorites and spent a lot of time helping Hope.  I had a plan to show that teacher that I wasn't inept in the homemaking department.  I was going to make several loaves of bread and a homemade pie and give it to her.  I may not be able to quilt, but I would show her I could at least cook.  Instead, I just quit the class because it was garden season.  I should have taken her a huge basket of produce! I chickened out in the end because I never did master anything in the class!

I digressed...this year Hope learned to knit.  She had lots of extra time during ballet rehearsals, and one of the older girls taught her.  She has spent much of her time these past few months knitting.  She enjoys it so I decided that she could teach me to knit.  She spent about an hour with me.  She wasn't a very patient teacher.  She tried, but in the end she decided that I was unable to knit.  I would have to find some other poor teacher other than her because she wasn't cut out to teach me.  I have found a girl willing to help me learn to knit.  She seems very patient and kind.  She even smiled when I told her of my lack of abilities in this part of homemaking.  I think this might just work.  I am looking forward to spending some time with her soon.  But just in case it doesn't go so well, I at least have this excuse to get me out of it...

You bring a smile to my face this morning, Julie! You are so funny. I can't do any of those things either but I haven't given them an honest try. Maybe one day...
By the way, is that veggie soup for supper tonight meatless? Yikes, your men folks will not be happy ;-)

There is a website called "knittinghelp.com" and it helped me learn to knit. The site actually has short little video clips to demonstrate how things are done.

Julie,
it looks like we share a set of talents, and also a daughter named Hope! (mine is six)

I read a book on knitting and had someone cast on my first knitting project which was a scarf. I would suggest big needles because it will help you see the process of knitting. For the dog sweaters, I knitted with size 11 or 12. Keep knitting, you will get the hang of it and yarn is cheap.

Also, if you are in Knoxville, I will help you. So if you come to town, let me know.

Carmen,
I couldn't learn to crochet either...maybe I am broke!

Paige,
Thanks for the offer. Your red and black granny squares look great. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Pam,
Your the smart one then... at least you don't have to admit that you are a failure with thread or yarn. Of course the veg. soup had meat in it...you know my men don't you! I make a homemade pork veggie soup.

Darleen,
That is my motto too. I would rather be good at cooking and gardening than sewing or knitting. Yea, that makes me feel better already!!!

Janice,
Thanks so much for letting me know. I may get those needles out again and give it another try.

Aimee,
I am so glad you commented. Hope isn't a name that you hear a lot around here, but I love the name.

Cynthia,
Thanks for the advice. Yarn is cheap and reusable so it is all good there. Thanks for the offer. If I get desperate, you might just find me at your front door. Don't worry, I'll call first! Hope your upcoming surgery goes well.

I know how you feel. My Mom can knit, crochet, quilt -- and I haven't learned to do any of it! I'd rather scrapbook and do counted cross stitch. Unfortuately there isn't time to do any of it, at least at this time in my life. Instead, I'm learning to make cheese!

Lynn,
I would rather learn to make cheese any day than learn to knit. I like the end result of the cheese better!!! Keep us posted on your cheese process.
